Lilly is 19 months old today! We are so proud of the little person she has become. She is amazingly resourceful and continues to amaze us with her vocabulary and communication skills. Not only does she know what she wants but she makes it happen. If she wants to eat grapes or cottage cheese she opens the refrigerator and gets them (unlike her mom she remembers to close the refrigerator when she’s done). If she wants something on the counter she will push a chair from across the room until she can reach the item in need. We are careful to watch her every move but are fairly permissive with these behaviors because Lilly is also extremely cautious. She knows that certain items are for ‘mom’ and always looks at me and holds items in question out to ask for approval. She tells us when she wants to go upstairs or use the potty (usually without success) and is very attentive of her baby doll, who she feeds and takes for frequent walks. She is not prone to tantrums because she is such a good communicator and is fairly reasonable (even though we know tantrums are coming…), but she will let you know just how unhappy she is if you take an item from her or prevent her from doing what she wants! My how far she has come!
The time has come: Lilly is down to one nap. I was hoping she’d continue with her morning nap for awhile longer but after a week of no morning nap and one or two days a week with one nap for several weeks before that, the morning nap has been officially dropped. It’s nice in some ways because we have longer stretches of time to do things together, but taking a shower is more complicated than I ever imagined! She typically sleeps from 1 until 3pm-ish. The afternoons have been nice but the mornings are long and I find myself getting out with her every day as she can be quite the handful. 🙂
Every new month with Lilly is my ‘favorite’ and 14 months is no exception. This is a fun age because her personality is shining. She is very headstrong, has a super-sweet tempermant, shows affection freely, loves to scribble, and has a special bond with our cat Roary and Nana and Bapa’s dog Rocket. Lilly has a renewed interest in books and loves to share her toys and food – especially with Roary! She tells us exactly what she wants and when she wants it and there’s never a doubt in our mind what she is trying to tell us.
Today I sent Lilly off for her first day of daycare. She will be going to Cameron Childcare in Bloomfield Hills (right around the corner from Nana and Bapa) every Tuesday. Bill and I decided awhile back that Lilly would benefit from more intense social interaction with kids her age. A friend of ours referred us to Peg’s at-home daycare and we were very impressed with her education-based program. She has four assistants and a total of 10 kids, serves all organic foods, and sends Lilly home with an art project every day. It was difficult leaving Lilly for the day but she was happy and VERY talkative when I picked her up. Between daycare and all the classes she’s signed up for, we’re both going to be very busy this Winter!
Lilly is completely weaned from bottles. I switched her cold-turkey to a sippy cup during the day several weeks ago but dropped the evening bottle for the first time tonight. We still rock and sing lullabies before putting her down – just switched the bottle to a sippy cup and she didn’t seem to mind at all. Amazing how babies (and toddlers) handle change so much easier than we do!
We are giving her rice, soy, almond, and hemp milk as an alternative to cows milk. She loves it!
May the record indicate that on 8/25 Lilly became a true walker (she walks more than she crawls). Here is a video of her toddling around at Nana Judy and Boppa Bill’s house Friday night. She has become a much more stable walker since then!
She is a walking (when she isn’t crawling, that is), talking, dancing machine! Happy 13 Months, Lilly!
*Yes, she took a tumble. We went to the Troy Aquatic Center on Saturday and Lilly fell when she was practicing her steps. Didn’t seem to bother her too much but it sure did leave a mark. 🙁
It’s amazing how Lilly picks up something new every day. She says several words now (mama, dada, hi, up, ball) and points to objects (cat, ball, mama, book, bear) when said out loud. She will also follow simple directions and will hug her pooh bear, touch her head, beep the horn of her toy car, or touch mama’s nose when you ask her to. She loves to mimic sounds as well as motions that we make.
Yesterday when I returned home from running errands while Katherine watched Lilly, she was very excited to see me and said ‘up up up up mama up up up’ to tell me that she wanted me to pick her up. So cute!
Here is a super cute video of Lilly at breakfast today.

525,600 minutes of Lilly and enough joy to fill a lifetime! Lilly is one year old today and we are so happy to celebrate this huge milestone with her first trip to The Beach! I feel badly that she spent much of her birthday on the plane (even though she had fun and was a perfect angel), but I know we will make up for it in the coming days!
Lilly took her first steps today! We got home from Nipigon at noon and were playing in her playroom shortly after when it happened. Lilly was trying to stack blocks on my head and would pull away and stand on her own for several seconds. She did this a few times and kept standing longer – finally she took one step towards me…and a minute later she took two! The fresh Northern Michigan air must have done something for her!
